Functional recovery following reptilean (Calotus calotus) spinal cord transection.

چکیده
Various approaches to remedy the effects of spinal cord injury have been suggested from time to time. One of these is to study the regeneration following spinal cord transection in phylogenetic lower species in order to gain some information from this for its application in non-regenerating spinal cord injuries in higher species. In the present study the functional recovery following spinal cord transection in a reptile (Calotus calotus) was studied in 30 animals, and it was observed that functional recovery was quite marked by 4 weeks and more or less comple by 6 weeks.

Histological changes in reptilean spinal cord transection: correlation with functional recovery.
The study of spinal cord regeneration in the phylogenetic scale is likely to help us in the understanding of the problem in the human situation. After spinal transection in lizards, histological changes in the spinal cord were studied and correlated with functional recovery. Some changes in spinal cord, suggestive of regeneration between the two stumps were observed. The recovery of function di...
متن کاملSpinal cord transection in the larval zebrafish.
Mammals fail in sensory and motor recovery following spinal cord injury due to lack of axonal regrowth below the level of injury as well as an inability to reinitiate spinal neurogenesis. However, some anamniotes including the zebrafish Danio rerio exhibit both sensory and functional recovery even after complete transection of the spinal cord. The adult zebrafish is an established model organis...
متن کاملSpinal microcircuits comprising dI3 interneurons are necessary for motor functional recovery following spinal cord transection
The spinal cord has the capacity to coordinate motor activities such as locomotion. Following spinal transection, functional activity can be regained, to a degree, following motor training. To identify microcircuits involved in this recovery, we studied a population of mouse spinal interneurons known to receive direct afferent inputs and project to intermediate and ventral regions of the spinal...
متن کاملEffect of VEGF on Inflammatory Regulation, Neural Survival, and Functional Improvement in Rats following a Complete Spinal Cord Transection
After complete transection of the thoracic spinal segment, neonatal rats exhibit spontaneous locomotor recovery of hindlimbs, but this recovery is not found in adult rats after similar injury. The potential mechanism related to the difference in recovery of neonatal and adult rats remains unknown. In this study, 342 animals were analyzed. The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) level in s...
متن کاملTransplantation of Olfactory Mucosa Improve Functional Recovery and Axonal Regeneration Following Sciatic Nerve Repair in Rats
Background: Olfactory ensheathing glia (OEG) has been shown to have a neuroprotective effect after being transplanted in rats with spinal cord injury. This study was conducted to determine the possible beneficial results of olfactory mucosa transplantation (OMT) which is a source of OEG on functional recovery and axonal regeneration after transection of the sciatic nerve. Methods: In this study...
